Apple
Client: level studios | My Role: UI / Visual Designer
Problem:
Over the past 25 years, Apple has acquired many different companies. Each of these companies use a different set of tools for tracking, such as Jira or Trello. When these instances go down (such as finishing a feature or terminating the organization) Apple looses all of this external data. Also, since these tools exist outside of Apple, each product is considered insecure and at risk for hackers to steal information. This was clearly a problem. Internally, Apple built a secure bug reporting system called Radar. The app lets developers submit bug reports and requests for specific products within a team. However, the app was built in the 80's and still terribly hard to use. Even today, some Apple teams use Jira because of the difficult UX of Radar.
Five years ago Apple tried making RPM, an internal tracking system to help aid Radar to fix the problem. It was an agile tool that attached to Radar, but also had a clunky UX/UI that was rushed to market. Core features such as backlogging weren't even in this app, making it useless to track history within the organization.
Last year, a stockholder at Apple took on the RPM project to solve. He wanted to redesign and re-platform RPM as a proof of concept to prove to Apple that Radar needed to be fixed ASAP. We called this new app rAgile.
Solution:
Over the course of a year, the team had complete freedom for a new business model and technicalities to develop from scratch. The only restrictions were to stick to the agile principles, the Apple HIG, and the UI kit.
When I arrived, the team had been developing new API's and Karin Curkowicz (Creative Director) was mapping out the new UX. I jumped in head first to lead the UI and Visual aspect of the app. I began building out new brand identities, ideation, and styleguides. Daily, we would go through ideation phase - walkthrough with stakeholders - review with team - prototype. This went on for the next six months.
This led to a comprehensive and well thought out product. It met all the requirements from User Research while gaining quality feedback from the Radar community. The foundation we made on the UX/UI was huge and the organization saw it.
